Our Natural Building services span the spectrum from earthen bread ovens to comfortable cottages that rely more on the Sun and Earth for their needs than the structural life support system that is our power grid.
Building a new home, or even a tool shed, does not have to be an expensive process fraught with toxic materials shipped in from thousands of miles away. New construction can be incredibly local and thoroughly biodegradable. Who doesn’t want a new home that, when no longer needed, can simply melt back into the Earth? (A surprising many of us, apparently.)
Whatever project you have in mind, we can help you bring it to life in a manner harmless to the Earth. Whether it’s a simple remodel, a new home, or a backyard accessory, we can help you find the appropriate solution.
Now, there is an enormous difference between the multitude of products presently on the market that have taken on a “Green Building” label and the actual process of natural building. The “Green Building” label has come to include an enormous variety of heavily-processed (and inherently toxic) materials that manage to improve the energy efficiency of the structure. Somehow, by ultimately reducing utility bills, a toxin-laden, mass-produced building material can be shipped two thousand miles, be utterly uncompostable (and nothing but landfill fodder in the end), unable to be burned in a campfire, unedible to humans, unappetizing to earthworms, and still be called “Green.” Still so new, and the phrase has already become hijacked.
Natural Building means building with raw materials; unprocessed, unmanufactured, and preferably not shipped anywhere. Natural materials are the Earth’s skin, the fruits that grow upon her face, her minerals in their myriad form.
Vernacular construction often goes hand in hand with natural building. This means using materials locally available, and in today’s American society that includes a plethora of “waste” matter, such as used tires, construction cutoffs, and all manner of items ready to be recycled.
We invite you to build with strawbales, build with cob, build in a new way that you have discovered in your dreams. Though you may not be in a position to embark upon an entire new structure built purely out of the Earth, you very likely may have a current and pressing need that can be filled by a natural building endeavor.
Whatever vision you may be entertaining in your mind, whatever dream you may hold in your heart, give us a call and let’s see what we can together bring into your reality.
